Our expert guide reveals all.

Why should I have a composite filling?

Aesthetic composite fillings rebuild teeth and restore them back to full functionality. They carry many of the strength properties of traditional amalgam fillings, but have become much more popular due to their ability to blend beautifully with your natural teeth. Also, modern composite material is built onto the tooth in layers, meaning less of the natural tooth needs to be removed in order to place the filling.

Dental composite is a type of resin made from a mixture of glass and plastic which, when hardened, looks just like dental enamel. It can be colour-matched to blend in perfectly with the natural tooth. We can replace noticeable metal fillings with white replacements for a more aesthetically pleasing look.

What does the treatment involve?

Preparation

We use local anaesthetic to numb the affected area in your mouth, before removing the decayed part of the tooth and cleaning it to prepare for the filling.

Application

We apply a special gel to your tooth, to ensure the composite material will bond effectively. The composite material is carefully colour matched to your existing tooth and then applied in layers. We mould it to match the shape of the tooth, and can create bite contours if necessary.

Setting

The composite is hardened using a bright light and sets immediately. After a professional polish, it looks just like a natural part of your tooth and is virtually undetectable.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I look after my filling?

To prevent decay forming around the composite filling, it is important to brush at least twice a day and see your dentist for regular check-ups.

  • What can composite material be used for?

As well as being used to fill cavities, dental composite can be used to effectively restore decayed, chipped, worn or broken teeth.

  • Will other people be able to see my filling?

No. Unlike more noticeable silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings blend beautifully into your natural teeth and other people won’t be able to tell they are there.

  • Can I have my silver fillings changed to white?

Yes, if you have had silver fillings placed in the past but no longer like the way they look, we are able to remove them and replace with white composite. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss this further.
